The Hamilton-Burr Duel Graphic T Shirt is our interpretation of an advertisement of the infamous duel between Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Their bitter political feud began in 1792, when Burr had defeated Hamilton's father-in-law and became Senator from New York. During the next ten years, Burr's attempts to obtain the Presidency of the United States (1800) and the Governorship of New York (1804) were thwarted by Hamilton's fierce personal attacks against him. Hamilton had considered Aaron Burr to be an “intriguer,” a contemporary slight referring to someone's lack of morality and even considered him a “cataline,” an allegory to a Roman traitor. At the time, criticisms of poltical positions were considered fair game, however attacks on someone's character were considered out of line. After learning about all these personal attacks, Burr demanded an apology from Hamilton. When Hamilton didn't oblige, Burr challenged him to a duel. On July 11th, 1804, the long standing political rivalry between the two men resulted in a duel in Weehawken, New Jersey. After agreeing to terms of the duel, each man took ten paces and shot their pistol. Hamilton's shot hit a tree, while Burr's shot fatally struck Hamilton in the torso. The Hamilton-Burr duel will forever be remembered as the most infamous duel in history!
